Gladys L. (Scheetz) Werner, 96, of Van Horne, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton.
A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. also at the church, with the Rev. Kolleen Queener officiating. Interment will be held at Salem Cemetery, Van Horne. Phillips Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Gladys was born on Oct. 1, 1926, at Luzerne, the daughter of Louie and Laura (Raabe) Scheetz, and graduated from Belle Plaine High School, with the class of 1944. She was united in marriage to Richard Werner on Feb. 1, 1948, in Van Horne.
Gladys and Dick farmed in the Van Horne area all their married life. They ran a farrow to finish hog operation, as well as raising cattle and poultry. Gladys was a very active member of Salem United Methodist Church, serving as chairman of the UMW for many years, as well as teaching Sunday School for over 16 years. She served as a 4-H leader and cub scout den mother in her younger years. Gladys was also active in her community, as a member of the Floralia Arrangers Guild and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her daughter, Dixie Luther of Land O’ Lakes, Fla.; her son, Dean (Jackie) Werner of Van Horne; four grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews, Carol (Scheetz) Johnson, Connie (Scheetz) Cannady, Wayne, Lyle and Ed Scheetz and Rita (Scheetz) Musleh.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard, in 2011; and siblings, Lenard, Charles, Louis and Elmer Scheetz.
The family would like to thank Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab for their comforting care the last four years.
