Gladys Ilene Wood, 93, of Marion, Iowa, passed away Aug. 20, 2023, at UnityPoint-St. Luke’s after a short illness. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 26, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories in Cedar Rapids. Entombment will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends and relatives may call from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the chapel.
Gladys was born July 15, 1930, to Orval and Luella (Young) Dahms in Iowa City. She married Amos Junior Wood on Sept. 7, 1946, in Olin. Gladys retired from LeFebure Bank Equipment after 17 and a half years. Gladys and Junior enjoyed meeting people and traveling to conventions in their sale of vitamins and supplements for many years. Gladys was a very creative and talented seamstress, making wedding gowns, including her daughter’s, stuffed animals, and purses. Her other passion was dancing, especially square dancing, with Junior for over 37 years and later with Chester Eales and Carl Ohrt. Gladys loved her family and friends. As soon as someone was introduced to her, they became family. Chester’s family became her adopted family.
Survivors include daughter, Marilyn (Charles) Hawthorn of Bettendorf; son, Dan (Susie Gould) of Anamosa; grandchildren, Melissa Hawthorn (Steve Silver) of Bettendorf and Cody Wood (Hadley Galbraith) of Iowa City; great-granddaughter, Mia Silver of Bettendorf and special friend Carl Ohrt of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior, in 2010; her parents, and siblings William, Donna and George (Bub).
