Gladys E. Christensen, 85, of Iowa City, died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at home surrounded by her family following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, by the Rev. Maury Campbell. Burial will be at Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the funeral home. Following the funeral, a luncheon will be held at The Kirkwood Room.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Gladys was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Iowa City, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Kloos Tomas Sr. Gladys married James "Jim" Christensen on Nov. 7, 1959, in Canton, Mo.
Gladys was employed in the business office at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for over 30 years, retiring in 1990.
Gladys and Jim enjoyed wintering in Arizona, leaving behind many special "Good Life" friends. She was a Red Hat Lady, loved playing cards and was an avid Hawkeye and STL Cardinals fan.
Most important to Gladys was her family.
Gladys is survived by her five loving children, Deborah (Barry) Cunningham of Corozal, Belize, Jeff Christensen of Dallas, Mike Christensen (Shannon Sprock) of Bowling Green, Mo., Jamee (Kevin) Kirchner of Cedar Rapids and Jodi (Mark) Schulz of Iowa City; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Karen Gatlin, Edward Christensen and Judy (Tim) Putney.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Jim; their son, Kevin; and her siblings, Marcella Sovers, Frank Tomas Jr., Chuck Tomas and Adeline Williams.
