Gilbert William Schocker, 93, of Monticello, died Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at home following an extended illness with his family by his side. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 28, at Peace United Church of Christ, 410 Cherry St., Monticello. The family will greet friends from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church. Inurnment will be held at a later date. Iowa Cremation is entrusted with the arrangements.
Gilbert was born June 27, 1922, in Wheatland, Iowa, to William and Lena (Brinkman) Schocker. He attended Liberty Township country school until the eighth grade and graduated from Wheatland High School with the class of 1940. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during and after World War II, from 1945 to 1947. Gilbert was united in marriage to Dorothy Jean Ott on Nov. 5, 1950, in Wheatland.
Gilbert worked for area farmers and lived on the family farm until 1970. Gilbert and Dorothy owned and operated Schocker's Market and Upholstery in Anamosa until 1987. Gilbert then worked for the city of Monticello until retiring in 2002. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Monticello, Clinton County Farm Bureau and Clinton County Adult Farmers. Gilbert enjoyed woodworking, playing cards and making friends and family laugh. One of his greatest joys was going on the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight in 2011.
Gilbert is survived by five children, Gary (Sue) Schocker of Davenport, Deb (Dave) Moeller of Cedar Rapids, Carolyn (Joe) Zimmerman of Fort Dodge, Allen (Karen) Schocker of Monticello and Elizabeth (David) Burmeister of Lost Nation; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Don (Ann) Ott of Wheatland and Dave (Sandy) Ott of Cedar Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy Schocker in 1999; two brothers; and two sisters.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Above & Beyond Hospice for their excellent care, strength and assistance during Gilbert's final days and also to Kay Clarke for taking Gilbert to senior dining.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous, Above & Beyond Hospice or Monticello Senior Dining.
