Gilbert Maas, 90, took the railway to his home in Heaven on April 25, 2018, from the Winslow House Care Center in Marion, Iowa, after a long illness. There will be no visitation, and a private family service will be held at Living Hope Wesleyan Church.
Gilbert was born to Edmund and Hedwig Maas and grew up in Menno, S.D. He served two years in the U.S. Navy. On Aug. 28, 1949, he married Velda Aman of Freeman, S.D.
Gilbert started his career on the railroad in February 1949 and retired in November 1991 with 30 years of service, having worked for the Milwaukee, Rock Island and Iowa Northern railroads as a locomotive fireman and engineer. He also worked many various jobs, depending on his seniority with the railroad. After retirement, he enjoyed riding his Harley and going back to South Dakota for pheasant hunting with his brother and brother-in-law. Gil was a friend of Bill W. for 38 years.
He leaves to mourn his wife, Velda, of 69 years; four children, Linda (John) Klebel, Glenn Maas (Laurie Mecham), Brenda Davis and Charles (Kim) Maas; five granddaughters, Neetra (Brandon) Williams, Chelsea Maas (Axel Larsen), Cierra Maas, Stephanie Maas and Mackenzie (Jeffrey) Hanna; one brother, Melvin (Carol) Maas; one sister, Darlene Van Metre; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; and one brother-in-law.
The family wants to thank the staff at Winslow House for the great care they gave Gil while he was there.
