Gibson, Melvin 'Buzz'
Melvin “Buzz” Gibson, 101, died Feb. 15, 2012, in Hampton, Iowa, at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. A visitation will be held before the service from 9 to 10:30 a.m.
Melvin was born Oct. 13, 1910, the son of Frank and Gennie (Gill) Gibson. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Rundall on Oct. 14, 1941. “Buzz” served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1942-1945.
He spent many cherished years at the hideaway cabins on the Wapsie. Buzz loved fishing and swapping stories with good friends, including Jim and Bob. He had a passion for bowling, but found time to enjoy baseball and softball. Buzz had the opportunity to play in the Armed Forces championship game in 1944. He built his career and retired from Maytag Corporation.
Buzz is survived by that special young man whom he referred to as (Jimmy) Jim and Diane Wilkinson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 1985; his parents and brothers.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society in honor of Evelyn Gibson.
