Gibbs, Doris Turney
Doris Turney Gibbs, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Slidell, La., passed away on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, at her home in Cedar Rapids. A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, at Keystone Cedars Assisted Living. Mike Patterson will officiate, with burial at Green Lawn Cemetery in Plattsburg, Mo., at a later date.
She is survived by her daughter, Beth (Preston) Johnson of Mount Vernon; sons, Randy (Cheryl) Gibbs of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Kenneth Gibbs of Atlanta, Ga.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Commander (Retired) USN Howard Ben Gibbs; and her parents, Gerald and Helen Turney.
Doris Marie Turney was born Aug. 16, 1924, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Gerald and Helen (Scott) Turney. Doris married Howard Gibbs on July 15, 1945, in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from The University of Kansas with a degree in music. Doris played violin in the symphony in Albuquerque, N.M. She taught grade school in Norfolk, Va., and she taught music throughout her life. Doris was a 40 year member of the First Presbyterian Church in Slidell, La., and she was an avid bridge player, earning the Silver Life Master ranking.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church in Slidell, La.
