Getz, Dennis R.

Dennis R. Getz, 71, of 824 14th St. SE, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, at his home. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Russ Strabala. The family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou; children, Paula Sargent of Sussex, England, Gretchen (David) Meints of Waterloo and Otto (Kristin) Getz of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, Cory, Zoe, Eric, Zevan, Izak, Ryan, Mitchell, Isabelle, Olivea and Oliver; two brothers, Harry (Joan) Getz of New Jersey and Ronnie (Kathy) Getz of Pennsylvania; and his beloved dachshund, Dottie.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents.

Born Dec. 18, 1941, in Doylestown, Pa., Dennis was the son of Harry and Dorothy (Armitage) Getz. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force. On Aug. 4, 1973, he was united in marriage to Mary Lou Sheldon. Dennis worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years.

Dennis was actively involved in his church community and a longtime member of the Harmony Hawks. He was a gifted writer. He wrote many short stories and poetry that he enjoyed sharing with family and friends. He was a dedicated fan of open wheel dirt track racing and the Cleveland Indians.

A memorial fund has been established in Dennis' memory.
