GERTRUDE "TRUDY" STEWART
Cedar Rapids
Gertrude "Trudy" Stewart, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Oct. 18, 2018, because of complications of a respiratory disease. Services and visitation will be held Friday, Oct. 26, at Christ Episcopal Church, Cedar Rapids, with visitation starting at noon followed by a service starting at 1 p.m. Following the service, there will be a time to meet with family. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home is caring for Trudy and her family.
Trudy was born to Oscar and Vera Nanfeldt on Feb. 17, 1933, in Elizabeth, N.J. Her family then moved west, first to Chicago and then to Des Moines, where she graduated from Roosevelt High School. In 1954 she married the love of her life, John. Their first year of marriage was spent living in Japan while John was in the service. She attended St. Luke's School of Nursing and, in later years, acquired a paraprofessional teaching license in health occupation. She finished her career in 1992 after retiring from Kirkwood Community College.
Trudy had spent her time volunteering for St. Luke's Hospital (logging more than 3,000 hours), Cub Scouts, Red Cross, Green Square meals, Christ Church and grade school and high school PTAs. She followed her children's and grandchildren's sports and activities, the Chicago Cubs and the Hawkeyes. Her own activities included tennis (which she played until age 79), duplicate bridge and, of course, doing things with her grandchildren, with whom she took on many outings.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, John; her sons, Bob (Lynn) and David (Suzanne); and daughter, Ann. Also her five grandchildren, Andy Stewart, Kelly (Jake) Winters, Emily Stewart, Kyle (Rachel) Stewart and Samantha Olson, along with many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank St Luke's hospice for taking wonderful care of her and her family in her last days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Luke's Hospice and the Kirkwood Foundation of Health Science Students.
Online condolences may be directed to the family at www.cedarmemorial.com under Obituaries.
