Gertrude Elizabeth (Gunkel) Scott, 90, formerly of Alburnett, died peace-fully Sept. 10, 2014, at Windsor Manor in Vinton. Per Gertrude's wishes, a memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Private family inurnment: Prairie Chapel Cemetery, rural Marion.
Survivors include two daughters, Judy Scott of Duluth, Minn., and Kristena Johnson (Steve Boddicker) of Vinton; one grandson, Jason Johnson (Lisa Yoder) of Parkers-burg; one sister, Helen Lindbo of Dickinson, N.D.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill, of 67 years; two brothers and three sisters (and their spouses).
Gertrude was born Sept. 18, 1923, the daughter of Carl and Elizabeth (Vassie) Gunkel in Belfield, N.D. She graduated from Belfield High School and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in North Dakota. On Sept. 19, 1943, Gertrude married William E. Scott at the Presbyterian Church in Belfield. She and Bill first farmed in rural Marion and, in 1960, moved to Alburnett, where they were proud and active members of the community. Gertrude was a member of Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church in rural Marion.
"Gertie" enjoyed being a farm wife, mother and grandmother. She excelled as a cook, baker, seamstress, gardener, friend and caregiver, and she loved to dance.
Memorials in Gertrude's memory may be directed to Prairie Chapel United Methodist Church, 1817 Prairie Chapel Rd., Marion, IA 52302.
