Gertrude "Hazel" Long, 94, passed away Jan. 25, 2018, at Pioneer Park Health Care Center in Lone Tree, Iowa.
Family services will be held at a later date in Eckert, Colo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice Compassus, 1621 E. Washington St., Suite 4, Washington, IA 52353.
Hazel was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Eckert, Colo., the daughter of Gertrude Miller and John H. Kehmeier. She graduated from Eckert High School in 1941, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics with a major in dietetics from Colorado State University in 1945.
On May 15, 1945, she was united in marriage to Keith R. Long in Eckert. The lived in Lompoc, Calif., and Lawrence, Kan., before moving to Iowa City in 1956. While in Lawrence, she served as assistant dietitian at the University of Kansas student union. After moving to Iowa City, she chose to be a homemaker.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Iowa City, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and as an elder. She was active in youth activities and was a Brownie scout leader. She was devoted to her family. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed reading and sewing.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Keith, and their five children, Susan Long of Iowa City, Donald (Ellen) Long of Littleton, Colo., Sheri (Joe) Long of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jeanne Wheeler of Houston, Texas, and Peggy (Kent) Graham of Lowden, Iowa; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two siblings, Norman Kehmeier of Eckert, Colo., and Louise Kehmeier of Fresno, Calif.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Hazel was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Bethany; and two brothers, Jack and Gordon.
