She was united in marriage to James T. Gibney Jr. on Nov. 18, 1947. The couple farmed near Norway for many years until moving to Newhall after their retirement. They enjoyed square dancing for many years. As a farm wife, Germaine especially loved spring on the farm, a time for planting and calving and baby pigs arriving. Her husband, James, preceded her in death on March 29, 2009. They celebrated 61 years of marriage.
Germaine was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Norway American Legion Auxiliary. She was a volunteer at the VA Hospital in Iowa City and at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her sons, Steven (Sandi) Gibney of Van Horne and Wayne (Carmen) Gibney of Atkins; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Cornell Deeny of Eagle Grove; her sisters, Marcella Stallman of Fairfax and Marion Brockhammer of West Union; her sisters-in-law, Helen Deeny of West Union, Correne Deeny of Waterville, Minn., and Mary Alice Gibney of Norway; her brother-in-law, Robert (Sara) Stark of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Bernard, Donald and Charlie; her sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Bill Balk; her brothers-in-law, Chuck Brockhammer, Jake Stallman and Ambrose Gibney; and her sister-in-law, Laura Deeny.
