Gerard, Geraldine M. 'Tiny'
Geraldine M. "Tiny" Gerard was born Sept. 25, 1916, in Millersburg, Iowa, a daughter of Andrew Harrison and Fern Odessa Pope Montross. Tiny was raised by her grandmother, Sarah Montross. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1933. Tiny was united in marriage to M. Dean Gerard in Oskaloosa on June 11, 1938. She worked as the Millersburg Postmistress for many years, retiring in 1973. Tiny was a member of the Millersburg United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Iowa County Genealogy Society, Millersburg Red Hat Society and a 50-year plus member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Dean preceded her in death in May 1987.
Tiny became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in April 2006. She died in North English on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009, at the age of 93 years and 13 days.
Tiny is survived by five daughters, Kay Allison, Twila Gerard, Lana James and husband Walt, all of Millersburg, Peg Schott and husband Marland of Coggon and Shelly Gerard of Millersburg; two sons, Wendell “Butch” Gerard and wife Nadine of Millersburg and Ric Gerard and wife Ramona of Amana; 14 grandchildren, Susan Lundberg, Nancy Combs, Debbie Potts, Kim Ritchie, Tammy Maas, Michael Gerard, Mary Jo Christian, Cheryl Heisch, Debbie James, Mari Goeke, David Schott, Molly Cook, Megan Toland and Shane Unkel; 29 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorla Dutcher of Cedar Falls, and Betty Husband of Millersburg; sisters-in-law, Beverly Montross of Millersburg and Ellen Gerard of North English; an aunt, Dorothy McShane of Marion; and special family friends, Patty Garringer, Roberta Voelkel and Wendy Greene.
Tiny was preceded in death by her parents; stepmother, Fern Sumers Montross; husband; grandsons, Denny Allison and Shannon Unkel; sisters, Donna Imogene Montross and Gail Gerard; and brothers, Ward Montross and Charles Eldon Montross.
A Celebration of Life service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at Millersburg United Methodist Church, with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Burial will be in Millersburg Cemetery.
