Susie had been cancer free for 7½ years before the cancer returned. She died doing what she loved. Susie was looking forward to this Alaskan cruise with her husband, Dan, daughter, Gerry, and son-in-law, Mike. She passed away before this could happen.
Susie was born November 16, 1938, in Bertram, Iowa, the daughter of Herbert and Arladene (Brown) Coonfare. She was united in marriage to Daniel Shulgin on May 18, 1974. Susie and Dan enjoyed over 30 years of boating at Lake of the Ozarks. Every weekend they would make the drive to boat and spend time with their friends. After retiring from Eagles as an accountant for over 20 years, she was able to spend more time doing what she loved. Her passion was traveling. She was fortunate to travel the world. Often ending up in her favorite place, Hawaii. She spent as much time as she could there, only coming home for doctor visits.
She loved shopping for her children and grandchildren, bringing gifts from her travels. Susie loved working crossword puzzles as well as putting puzzles together to keep her mind sharp. She loved to listen to her favorites, Jimmy Buffett and Neil Diamond. Susie loved her plants and flowers and enjoyed bird watching. Her one belief was to live your life, travel, and enjoy. Her beautiful smile will be missed more than words can say.
She is survived by her husband, Dan of over 50 years; daughters, Gerry (Mike Wallace) of Atkins, Iowa, and Christene King of Messina, New York; sisters, Betty Hall of Bertram, Iowa, Winnie Alger of Bertram; brother, James (Mickey) Coonfare of Shueyville, Iowa; sister-in-law, Mary Shulgin of Dubuque, Iowa; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Herbert and Arladene Coonfare; sister, Mary; brother, Herbert; and her sons, Jim and Charles King.
Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial fund that has been established.
