GERALD SHAYER

Gerald Shayer, 88, of Tama, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the Marshalltown Medical and
Surgical Center. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Christ United Methodist Church Worship Center in Toledo, with Pastor Brian Oliver officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Tama. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 22, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Gerald was the son of Otis and Fern (Lutes) Shayer. He was born Aug. 7, 1926, near Dunbar, Iowa, in Marshall County. The family moved to several different farms in Marshall County before moving to Traer and then to a farm east of Toledo which later became Otter Creek Lake. He attended high school in Traer and then in Toledo.
On Jan. 20, 1945, he was united in marriage to Irene Lundt at First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. They were married for 68 years. Gerald farmed for several years before moving to Tama. He then worked for Northern Propane Gas Co. in Tama and General Telephone Co. in Toledo until his retirement in 1991.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Toledo. Gerald especially enjoyed spending time with his family, working on home im-provement projects and traveling.
Survivors include two children, Christine (Quentin) McCune of Tama and Joel (Andrea) Shayer of Launceston, Tasmania; two granddaughters, Jill (Scott) Hiestand of Elk Grove Village, Ill., and Jessica (Tom Jr.) Tesar of North Liberty; three great-grandchildren, Emily and Brooke Hiestand and Tripp Tesar; and three sisters, Dorothy Bullock of Nevada, Norma Angell of Cedar Rapids and Marie Hill of Carrollton, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, on Sept. 17, 2013; a daughter, Linda Ann; two brothers, Owen and Darrell Shayer; and two sisters, Della Sikir and Jeanette Shaneyfelt.
A memorial fund has been established.
