Gerald Michael Belz, 18, of Cedar Rapids, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2019, in Iowa City. Services: 10 a.m. Monday, St. Jude Catholic Church by the Rev. Mark Murphy. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit the family on Sunday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, and on Monday after 9 a.m.
Gerald is survived by his parents, Michael and Sherine, and his brother, Andrew, all of Cedar Rapids; his grandparents, Alan and Linda Belz of Osage, Abdul Kareem of Cedar Rapids, and Margaret Hansz of Colombo, Sri Lanka; his aunts, Cyndi Belz of Forest City, Clarise Escalante of Cedar Rapids and Iona Smith of Cedar Rapids; his uncle, Anslem Ameer of Kuwait; his girlfriend, Leeanne Mehring-Cruz of Cedar Rapids; and many cousins.
Gerald was born on Feb. 10, 2000, in New London, Conn., son of Michael and Sherine Belz. He attended Viola Gibson Elementary School, Harding Middle School, graduated from Kennedy High School in 2018, and currently was a pre-med student at the University of Iowa. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church and the Cedar Rapids Headhunters Rugby Club.
Gerald enjoyed playing video games. He had his amateur radio operator's license, KDOLME, since the fifth grade. He had a big heart and a strong will. He presented a quiet, tough persona but was very compassionate. Gerald will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
