Gerald “Jerry” William Meyers, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Aug, 4, 2023, at the Carrollton Hospital, in Carrollton, Texas. A memorial gathering will be held at the Ely Community Center, located at 1570 Rowley St., Ely, Iowa, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2023. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.
Gerald was born Feb. 15, 1942, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Virgil and O’Donna (Roethler) Meyers. Jerry graduated from Volga City High School. He worked for Penick and Ford in Cedar Rapids for a few years, until he had some health issues and later relocated to Arizona, to better meet his health needs. Jerry was an avid sports fan, he coached a baseball team in Bruce, Wis., during the summer, and he loved cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. He was a local celebrity for walking thousands of miles and picking up litter in Phoenix, for which he received a Good Samaritan award. Jerry loved to tease everyone, especially his nieces and nephews. He kept in touch with his nieces and nephews by postcards.
He is survived by his siblings, Jim Meyers of Pocahontas, Ark., Joe (Dodie) Meyers, and Mary Knoblauch of Frisco, Texas, Barb (Doug) Pitlik of Mount Vernon, Iowa, and Cindy (Mark Ranard) Meyers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
