Gerald "Jerry" Eugene Topping passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2022, after a long battle with pneumonia. His smile and talkative nature knew no stranger, and his love for his grandchildren knew no bounds.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 520 Wilson Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at Linwood Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.
Jerry was born Oct. 21, 1941, to Eugene and Dorothy Topping. The love of his life, Ruth (Knight) married him Jan. 26, 1963, and they were together for 49 years until her passing in 2012. Together they had four children - Tom, their angel Missy, Anthony (Honna) and Tracey (Dani). Their greatest love was reserved for their grandchildren - Quentin, Elizabeth, Tyler, Nathan, Kaitlyn, Emma and Maddie.
Jerry worked for years as a manager at Eagle's before becoming a custodian at Freedom Group and Fiserv, then coming back to work at Hy-Vee part time before retirement.
Jerry served honorably as a mail clerk in Germany during the Vietnam War, bringing his wife and two children with him.
Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Topping; daughter, Stephanie Michelle Topping; parents, Eugene and Dorothy Topping; and three sisters, Marilyn, Carol and Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
