On Friday, May 13, 2022, the world lost a great man. Gerald J. Garin was called to join his beloved sons, Kevin and Gary in Heaven. Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Jude Catholic Church, by the Rev. Mark Murphy. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family Tuesday, after 9 a.m. at the church. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Gerry was born in Allamakee County on Aug.
24, 1935, to Cyril and Viola Garin. He had an older brother Leo, sister, Kathleen, and a younger brother Keith. Gerry grew up on the family farm and was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed a lifetime of hunting and fishing. He attended country school until he graduated in 1952 from Immaculate Conception Catholic High School, Lansing. Gerry married Kathleen Weber on April 28, 1956, at Immaculate Conception Church, Lansing. In 1956, Gerry started a job in Cedar Rapids as an apprentice for Paul Hamil Construction Co., where he learned about the trade. Gerry was a hard worker, very reliable, and developed skills that helped him move up to estimator and foreman. He then worked at Pearson Wall System until his retirement.
Gerry is survived by his wife of 66 years, Kathy; four children, Roger (LaDonna) of Cedar Rapids, Vicki (Ray) Atkins of Cedar Rapids, Alan (Cindy Kelly) of Harpers Ferry and Rita (Jeff) White of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Jillian (Corey) Sandersfeld, Niall (Lee) Garin, Shawn Mooney, Kelly (Shawn) Mooney, Ryan Mooney, Jamie Garin, Seth (Alicen) Kelly, Summer Garin, Garrett (Shannon) Garin, Joshua and Noel White; great-grandchildren, Megan, Mallory and Luke Sandersfeld, Destinee Collins, Kenadee Luedeman, Joslyn Mooney and Vincent Mooney, Maximus, Rose, Augustus, Cruz and baby boy Kelly due next month and Carter Garin; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Garin; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Gary and Kevin; sister, Kathleen Troendle; two brothers, Keith (Patty) and Leo; and nephews, Mike Troendle, Randy and Nick Garin.
Gerry was a devoted catholic and charter member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He was a big part of organizing the St. Jude Sweet Corn Festival and was a past president of the festival. Gerry was an Irishman who was fun-loving and enjoyed a few beers with his family and friends. He loved to watch his children and grandchildren in their many sporting events and even helped coach little league when his sons played. Gerry liked to watch the Chicago Cubs and go out to breakfast with his friend John Crumbaugh. With the love and help of his children and grandchildren, Gerry enjoyed a great life.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Humane Society, Greater Iowa Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association or charity of the donor's choice.
