Gerald DeWayne Tharp passed away on October 2, 2025, at his home, The Views of Marion. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, from 10:00 am until the 11:00 am Funeral Service at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Pastor Bunny Dillard will officiate and interment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in the Garden of Eternal Love.
Jerry was born on May 22, 1938, in Cedar Rapids, IA to Durward and Hazel (Reid) Tharp. Gerald worked in Quality Control for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids and Coralville for 48 years. He married Carol Severin on September 20, 1959, in Keystone, IA. Jerry was stationed in Cambridge, MN and served in the United States Army for six years. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he served on the Property Board and took great pride in caring for the Church lawn. Jerry loved his cars and was known to wax the paint right off of them. He loved all sports, and has a particular passion for football and was a football official for 27 years. He loved to spend time with his family and was loved by all.
Gerald is survived by his children, Therese (Jim) Plummer, Todd (Angela) Tharp and Jamie (Staci) Tharp; grandchildren, Brett, Hannah, Abby, Sadie and Mason.
Jerry is preceded in death by his wife, Carol of 61 years; his parents; and grandson Connor.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Cedar Rapids.
