Gerald Dean Olson was born Feb. 27, 1940, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Earl and Lydia (Zuber) Olson. He attended the Lutheran Interparish School and graduated from Conroy High School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1959 to 1965. On Dec. 22, 1963, Jerry was united in marriage to Sharon Read in Monticello, Iowa. To this union they were blessed with two children Erin and Andrew. Sharon passed away on Jan. 29, 1996. Jerry later married Janice Starks Carney in Parnell on July 25, 1998. He was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of the Iowa County I-Club (Go HAWKS!) and enjoyed going to as many Hawkeye events as possible. Attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities was always a priority. Jerry was a great example of faith to his family and lived 1 Corinthians 13:4-7… Love never ends. Jerry was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy, where he served as the finance chairman and an elder. Jerry died on Friday, June 23, 2023, at his home, at the age of 83 years.
He is survived by his wife, Janice of South Amana; a daughter, Erin (Dan) Walter of Washington, Ill.; a son, Andy (Mindy) Olson of Moline, Ill.; stepchildren, Julie (Eldon) Harl of Williamsburg, Brian (Shelly) Carney of Plattsmouth, Neb., John Carney of Billings, Mont., Barbara (Eric) Denison of North English, Don (Billy Jo) Carney of Edinburg, Va., and Kevin (Brenda) Carney of Corpus Christi, Texas; 20 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jan (John) Sperry of Hiawatha.
He was preceded by his parents; first wife, Sharon; a daughter-in-law, Cheri Carney; and a son-in-law, Charles Sandersfeld.
Celebration of Life funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Conroy. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church.
