Georgiana Joy Sparenborg, 88, of Marion, passed away peacefully on Oct. 6, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital, just 10 days before her 89th birthday. Private family services will be held Tuesday morning, Oct. 11, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, with burial in Oak Shade Cemetery.
Joy was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Charles City, Iowa, to Ralph and Edna (Huffman) Cagley. She married Merle C. Sparenborg on March 2, 1947. Joy was employed by the city of Marion for 30-plus years, retiring in 1990 as city clerk and city treasurer. She was an active member of Eastern Star, ABWA and Marion Business Girls.
Joy is survived by her children, Susan (Andy) Dergo of San Tan Valley, Ariz., Steven (Brenda) Sparenborg of Poolesville, Md., and Sandra Sparenborg of Marion; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Glendora Lightbody of Silver Springs, Fla., and Carol (Dennis) Lueck of Regina, SK, Canada; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Merle; and sister, Peggy Davis.
