George Walter Meaney passed away peacefully the evening of Wednesday, January 22, 2025. He was born October 9, 1934 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of Ralph D Meaney Sr. and Emaline Van Duzer Meaney. George graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1954. He joined the US Navy in 1956 and was an aviation engine mechanic. He joked that he was a very salty sailor, having spent a whole 5 days at sea! George married while in the Navy and spent his remaining Navy time at the Naval base in Sanford, FL. After his return from service, he worked at Allen Motor Company as a mechanic and then had his own garage and auto repair business He later worked for the Cedar Rapids Transportation Department as a bus driver and trainer, and later as a school bus driver for the Cedar Rapids School District. After retiring from bus driving George worked as the first chauffeur for Methwick Manor retiring in 2009. In 2011 he married again to Mickey Armstrong, they divorced in 2016, however remained friends for the rest of his life.
George was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids serving as a deacon for 3 terms and many years as an usher. He frequently helped with the Sunday Evening Meals Program and other volunteer duties. He volunteered for 10 years at St. Luke's hospital.
George was a member of Mt. Hermon Masonic Lodge 263 where he became a Past Master.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ralph Dewey Meaney and nephew Gordon Meaney. Memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church, 310 5th St SE, Cedar Rapids 52403; or Mt Herman Lodge at Masonic Temple 210 6th St NE, Cedar Rapids, 52402. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on January 30, 2025 at 1:00 pm.
