George Stancel, celebrating 90 years of life, of the Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017, at UnityPoint Hospital, Des Moines, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 25, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial with military rites: Anderson Cemetery, Swisher.
George was born May 15, 1926, in rural Linn County, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Lottie Pirkel Stancel. George attended country school and lived on the family farm near the community of Western, Iowa. On Sept. 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to Della Hearn in Cedar Rapids. George served in the Army during the Korean War, from 1950 to 1952. He was stationed in Japan.
Together, George and Della raised their twin sons, Dennis and Kenneth; and daughter, Linda, in Cedar Rapids. George was a member of the United Federation of Grain Millers AFL-CIO and worked for Penick & Ford in Cedar Rapids, retiring in 1992.
George enjoyed traveling, spending time with family and friends, gardening, walking the mall and celebrating his Czech heritage. George was a member of the American Legion in Cedar Rapids and Swisher. He did fundraising for charities and donated blood his entire adult life.
Left to cherish his memory are two sons, Dennis (Debra) Stancel of Atkins and Kenneth (Katherine) Stancel of Des Moines; six grandchildren, Laura Smoyer, Ryan Stancel, Ellen Stancel, Matt (Jackie) Stancel, Timothy (Erin) Stancel and Linsey (Matt) Hansen; nine great-grandchildren, Drake Hess, Maxwell Stancel-Hess, Ella Stancel, Braeden Smoyer, Kaylee Stancel, Maggie Stancel, Reese Stancel, Mason Hansen and Madison Hansen; and one sister, Lottie Yeries of Hills.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Stancel; his daughter, Linda Williams; his parents; his four brothers; and four sisters.
The family would like to give a special thank-you to the Iowa Veterans Home for the care that George received.
