George Elmer Stahl passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016. in Williamsburg, at the age of 93 years.
George was born July 4, 1923, in rural Williamsburg, the son of Elmer George and Eleanor June (Richards) Stahl. He attended Pilot Grove School and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1941. George was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served from 1945 to 1946. On Feb. 16, 1952, George was united in marriage to Rita Costello in Millersburg and they were blessed with eight children. He farmed before and after his Navy service and in 1967, purchased a petroleum truck and hauled fuel for Iowa County Farm Service. In 1988, he retired from hauling fuel and went to work for Rita at the Raider Drive In, where she promoted him to head custodian. George was the last charter member of Iburg Poulson VFW Post 8797, Williamsburg.
He enjoyed dancing, playing cards and attending as many sporting events as he could, especially those of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
George is survived by his wife, Rita of Williamsburg; his children, Marsha White, Sheri (Garth) Wetjen and Gary (Judy) Stahl, all of Williamsburg, Barb (Dennis) Grauer of Oxford, Lori (Tom) Beemer of Iowa City, Stuart (Pam) Stahl of Ankeny and Michelle (Doug) Sims of Marengo; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents; a daughter, LouAnn Martinson; a sister, Ruth (Harvey) Burgy; and an infant sister, Eleanor June Stahl.
Celebration of Life memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at St. Mary's Hall, Williamsburg. Timothy Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Pilot Grove Cemetery with military eites. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Hall, Williamsburg.
A general memorial fund has been established.
