George A. Rstom died peacefully Sunday, June 29, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Dennis and
Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha following in extended illness. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home, with a vigil service starting at 4 p.m. A private family service will be at a later date. Burial will be in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Jeanette; daughter, Sharon Turner of Lutz, Fla.; son, Ronald Rstom of Hiawatha; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grand-children; four great-great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Ester (Walter) Zellmer of Mankato, Minn., Delores Weimer of Mankato, Minn., Jean Kruse of Mankato and Carol (Joseph) Schefter of Modesto, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Rory Rstom and Richard Rstom; and a brother, Herbert Rstom.
George was born March 24, 1920, in Mankato, Minn., the son of Naiff and Frances Abdo Rstom. He attended school at Mankato State in Minnesota. On Feb. 12, 1942, George and Jeanette Rorah were united in marriage in De Witt, Iowa. George worked for the Rock Island Railroad as a yardmaster for over 30 years before retiring in 1980.
He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
George was a loving husband, father, grand-father and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to him.
