George Richard Coontz, 96, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at Boyson Heights Assisted Living Center. Services have postponed and will be scheduled for a later date.
George was born Aug. 17, 1925, in Denver, Iowa, to George and Wilhelmina (Dieckmann) Coontz. After he graduated from high school, he went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Iowa State University. He served two years in the U.S. Army, and as a drill sergeant he was stationed in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. He married the love of his life, Georgianna Kruckenberg, on July 19, 1952, in Luzerne, Iowa. He started and worked for Jones & Coontz Co. up until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and in his younger years was a member of the Harmony Hawks and Toastmasters.
He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, fishing and traveling. His fondest trips were to Finland, Russia, Germany, Canada and Alaska. He cherished the time he spent with his family.
George is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Georgianna Coontz; children, Donald, Patricia (Mark) Teply and Carol (Tom) Welbes; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Cynthia; and his brothers, Carl, Vernon and Romayne.
