George W. Osterhaus, 94, of Robins, Iowa, formerly of Whittier, Iowa, passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion, Iowa. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 31, at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Cedar Rapids with full military honors.
George was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Fillmore, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Liebolt) Osterhaus. He was a 1945 graduate of Independence High School and went on to serve honorably in the United States Army during World War II. George attended Iowa State University and Upper Iowa University. On Sept. 8, 1951, George was united in marriage to Margaret L. Miller at Sacred Heart Church in Oelwein, Iowa. He worked for 10 years as a welder for Allis Chalmers before spending 27 years working for the United States Postal Service. George was a Scoutmaster of the Order of the Arrow Boy Scouts Club. He was a master gardener and loved to go camping, play chess or Sudoku and go out dancing. George will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
George is survived and lovingly remembered by his children, Theresa Polton of Hiawatha, Iowa, Alfred Osterhaus of Salem, Ore., Chuck (Wendy) Osterhaus of Robins, Iowa, and Patricia Osterhaus of Hiawatha; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Yong, Charlotte and Keitha; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Catherine Osterhaus; wife of 32 years, Margaret Osterhaus; children, Jane and Paul Osterhaus; daughter-in-law, CJ Osterhaus; son-in-law, Donald Polton; longtime companion, Helen Lamphier; and his 10 siblings.
Memorials in George's memory may be directed to St. Luke's Hospice Inpatient Unit or Boy Scouts of America Hawkeye Area Council Offices.
