Solon
George Leon Meyer, 89, of Solon, died Friday, March 14, 2014, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the Solon United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 S. Cedar St.
George was born Feb. 23, 1925, in rural Solon, the son of John and Margaret (Holubar) Meyer. He received his elementary education at the Stone Academy and his high school education from Solon High School, graduating in 1943. He farmed with his parents, until he was united in marriage to Marion Crozier on Jan. 7, 1947, in Solon. He purchased his parents' farm and continued farming until retiring in 1984. After his retirement, he worked part-time at Solon Community Schools and the Solon Post Office. He moved off of the farm in 1993 to Solon and continued to spend considerable time on the farm.
George was an active member of the Solon United Methodist Church. He relied on his deep faith to sustain him when he encountered major health problems. His greatest joys in life consisted of his years farming, his time spent with his family and attending his daughters' and grandchildren's activities.
George is survived by his daughters, Patricia (Tim) Turner of Onalaska, Wis., Virginia (Greg) Kunkel and Jane Meyer, both of Solon, and Connie (Bob) Parnell of Marion; nine grandchildren, Katie (Shawn) Christenson, Kris (Amy) Kunkel, Kyle (Erin) Kunkel, Aaron (Kimberlee) Kunkel, Ryan, Justin, Jacob Brown, Alexis Bailey and Tiffany (Justin) Yates; five great-grandchildren, Isaac, Liam, Claire, Kacie and Sydney; one brother-in-law, Bill Morio of Lisbon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of over 61 years, Marion, who died on May 25, 2008; his infant twin daughters, Mary and Marcia; his sister, Ruth Morio; and his brother, Donald Meyer.
A memorial fund has been established in his name. Memorials may be directed to Solon United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice, 1025 Wade St., Iowa City, IA 52240.
