George William McCord,
88, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2017, in his home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling St. SW.
George was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Marshalltown, the son of George and Permelia (Heckle) McCord. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Wilson High School. George served in the Iowa National Guard from 1947 to 1949. He was united in marriage to Joan Jecmenek on Aug. 1, 1950, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church. Joan died Nov. 8, 2002. He was united in marriage to Shirley Emerson on Oct. 25, 2003, at NCSML.
George started working at Collins Radio, then owned and operated A-1 Conoco for many years, and retired from Quaker Oats. He collected and sold model trains, enjoyed garage sales and thrift stores, coffee group with friends and spending time with his family. George was a member of various train collector clubs and a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council.
George is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Cynthia (Dennis) Duda, Jenny (Steve) Murphy, Laurie Berdahl, Amy (Andy) Guerra and Sarah (Rick) Long; stepsons, Max (Lori) Emerson and Jim (Annie) Emerson; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; his sister, Delores Holecek; and a brother-in-law, Donnie Bolton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan McCord; his daughter, Mollie McCord; three brothers, Ted, Ron and John McCord; and his parents.
Memorials may be directed to either St. Wenceslaus or Trinity Lutheran Church.
