George J. Machacek, 90, a lifelong resident of Marion, passed away Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, in the Chicago area following a holiday celebration with his entire family. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, with a vigil service beginning at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. Private family burial: Lafayette Cemetery, west of Alburnett.
George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Charlotte; two daughters, Beverly (Eugene) Bordelon of Warrenville, Ill., and Norma Machacek of Cedar Falls; two grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Bordelon of Deerfield, Ill., and Amanda (Matthew George) Bordelon of Murray, Utah; and one great-grandson, Connor Bordelon.
George was born March 14, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, to Frank and Marie (Secl) Machacek. Soon after graduation from Springville High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Force. After training in the States, he was stationed in Italy for World War II. On his fifth mission, he was injured and spent 116 days hospitalized. He was a recipient of a Silver Star, Purple Heart and Air Medal. Returning to the States, he taught at Chanute Field in Rantoul, Ill.
He worked at the Linn County Rural Electric Cooperative for 40 years, retiring in June 1986. He married Charlotte Stephenson on Oct. 18, 1949, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. George was very active over the years in the Lions Club, at St. Joseph Church and as a volunteer at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City and UIHC Eye Clinic.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
