George Robert Ludlow, 94, of Marion, died Sunday, March 22, 2015, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Thursday, March 26, at First Presbyterian Church, Marion, by the Rev. Dr. Howard Chapman. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; daughters, Susan (Craig) Fischer of Leawood, Kan., and Mary Alfrey of Springdale, Ark.; grandsons, Brian (Michelle) Fischer of Dallas, Texas, Andrew (Deborah) Fischer of Middleton, Wis., and Michael Fischer of Dallas, Texas; granddaughters, Jennifer (Kyle) DenHartog of Waterloo and Kayla Alfrey of Little Rock, Ark.; four great-grandchildren, Charles, Catherine, Graham and Reid; and sister, Mary Fuller of Mobile, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
George was born March 22, 1921, in Kenwood Park, Iowa, the son of James William and Eva Estella (Millard) Ludlow. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids in 1938 and went on to graduate from Cedar Rapids Business College in 1942. George was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, having served as staff sergeant during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He married Margaret Elaine Beadle on Sept. 8, 1948, at the First United Methodist Church in Marion. Upon completion of his service to his country, George earned his business degree from the University of Iowa in 1949. He worked as a financial officer for Chandler Co. (1951-78), Kingston Supply (1979-85), Tennessee Pipe & Supply (1986-90), Barry Development (1990-93), and Olmstead Construction until his retirement.
George was a member of Kenwood Park Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon, elder and trustee. He served as president of Elmcrest Country Club, XClub and Tri-States Credit. He also was a member of Indian Creek Country Club, American Legion and First Presbyterian Church of Marion. He was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing golf and traveling.
