George L. Hanssen of Mitchellville, Md., formerly of Accokeek, Md., and Monticello, Iowa, died Sunday, June 14, 2015, from lung cancer.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth B. Hanssen; children, Ronald A. Hanssen and his wife, Mary B. Hanssen, Lorraine A. Collins and her husband, Joseph F. Collins, and Helen M. Hanssen; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren also survive him.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Austin A. Hanssen, six sisters and two brothers.
He was born Dec. 19, 1927, near Monticello, Iowa, to Arthur E. and Blanche M. Hanssen. He attended Spartan School of Aeronautics, Tulsa, graduated from Oklahoma State University and took graduate studies in the Washington, D.C., area.
George, a retired oceanographer, had worked at the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office, Suitland, Md. He conducted environmental studies and participated in worldwide field projects in support of naval operations. George pioneered the use of small computers for forecasting ocean acoustic conditions and their effect on the perfor-mance of Navy antisubmarine systems.
He lived a life of easy affability, wisdom and kindness. He loved working in his vegetable garden and fruit orchard. He was a history buff and published a book chronicling early Accokeek.
