GEORGE FAHNLE
Cedar Rapids
George J. Fahnle, 93, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Newhall, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at the Villages at Marion. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Monday, March 3, at St. Jude Catholic Church. Burial: St. Patrick Cemetery in Watkins. A visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday March 2, at Cedar Memorial Westside Chapel.
George was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Norway, Iowa, the son of George and Anna (Montague) Fahnle. He married Geraldine Boddicker on Nov. 4, 1941, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Before his retirement, he was a bookkeeper for several businesses in the Cedar Rapids area, most recently for Hawkeye Ready Mix and Brown & Dyer. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.
Surviving are his children, Louise Michal, Bruce (Sharon) Fahnle, Jacob (Theresa) Fahnle, Sarah (Robert) Essig and Peter (Julie) Fahnle; sister, Betty McKechnie; 12 grandchildren, Joe (Kim) Michal, Sue (Jon) Clark, Jason (Melissa) Fahnle, Brian (Robin) Fahnle, Anna Fahnle, Seth Fahnle, Ben Fahnle, Max (Cathy) Bucklin, Mindi Bucklin, Greg (Danielle) Fahnle, Dan Fahnle and Jill Fahnle; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; son-in-law, Joe Michal; two grandsons; his parents; three sisters; and three brothers.
George was a man of many interests. He enjoyed causing trouble, eating sweets, hunting pheasants and rabbits, fishing (especially on Clam Lake in Siren, Wis.), Norway baseball, the New York Yankees and listening to Xavier football on the radio. He was a casino regular and an ardent Cyclone fan. Any day he could be seen wearing Cyclone red and gold from head to toe, especially if the Hawkeyes lost!
It is impossible for us to thank everyone who enriched our father's life throughout the past 93 years. Please know that you were all very important to him and that he appreciated you. The family would especially like to thank the people living and working at the Villages at Marion (including Kloie) and everyone at Riverside Casino, too many to name individually, for your friendship. He loved you all. In dad's words: Thank you, thank you, thank you. Take care.
He was a hell of a
fisherman.
