George Jerome Brecht, 83, of Walker, died Thursday, May 22, 2014, at his home. Family will greet friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, at the Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point. Burial
will be in Walker Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Jeanne of Walker; children, Susan Woods of Walker, Mark (Sue) Brecht of Waterloo, Peggy Fitzsenry of Independence, Russell (Linda, friend) Brecht of Walker and Brad (Cammie) Brecht of Dubuque; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and two on the way; and siblings, Marilyn, Elodie, Elaine (Clark) and Jim (Barb).
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Justin; sister, Bernadine; and brother, Don.
George was born Aug. 27, 1930, in East Moline, Ill., son of Bernard and Josephine (VanSteenhuyse) Brecht. George served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. On July 31, 1953, he married Eva Jeanne Smock in Iowa City, Iowa. George was a longtime welder and designer and also a truck driver for a short time. He was a jack-of-all-trades, master of many.
George was a member of American Legion Ray Post 376. He enjoyed fishing, cards and gambling with his wife, but most of all, he loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ghosh, Unity-Point Hospice and the many doctors who cared for him.
