George "Albert" Hepker Jr., 79, died Tuesday, July 19, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following complications of open heart surgery.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 23, at Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg with Pastor Mark Leckband officiating. Interment will be at Urbana Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton.
A memorial fund has been established.
George, known to family and friends as Albert, was born Nov. 28, 1936, near Urbana to George Elias and Genivive (Rouse) Hepker. He graduated from Urbana High School in 1956. On Oct. 20, 1956, he was united in marriage to Janice Kay Wendel at Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg. She preceded him in death on May 20, 2011.
Albert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg, where he served as an elder, Sunday school superintendent and many other positions. He was employed at Cedarapids Inc. for many years.
For 50 years, he was a member of the Urbana Polk Township Volunteer Fire Department amd for 30 years, was the 4-H leader of Polk 101 4-H Club. He was honored to be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his daughter, Becky (Gary) Raue of Urbana; his son, Todd (JoAnn) Hepker of Vinton; his grandchildren, Hank (Vanessa) Raue of Urbana, Eli Raue of Urbana, Eric (Kyle) Weekly of Houston, Texas, Ryan Weekly of Center Point, Sarah (Marc) Smith of Urbana and Michael Hepker of Cedar Rapids; and great- grandchildren, Mikayla, Bryston and Olivia Raue and Landon and Sawyer Smith.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Wendy Getty; his nephew, Matthew Wendel; and his sister, Irene Grimm.
