GENEVIEVE M. STICKNEY
Marion
Genevieve M. Stickney, 95, of Marion, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016, at Keystone Cedars Assisted Living, Cedar Rapids. Service: 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Craig Brown. The family will greet friends before the service from 9:30 a.m. until service time. Private family burial will take place Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion.
Genevieve was born to Merle and Violet Tanner and raised near Palo, until the effects of the Great Depression led to the sale of the family farm. The family moved to Cedar Rapids. She married Harold Stickney on April 19, 1942, in Kahoka, Mo., just prior to his assignment to the USS South Dakota. The scarred battleship returned and the reunited family shipped out to duty in Louisiana until the war's end. Harold and Gen came home to the family business, the Kozy Inn. In 1948, they bought the Scoreboard in Marion and operated it until retiring in 1984.
Gen was an active member of First Lutheran Church, PEO and Marion American Legion Post No. 298 Auxiliary.
She is survived by sons, Tom (Shirley) of Marion and Jim (Jane Prater) of North Liberty; daughter, Susan of St. Louis; and grandchildren, Scott Stickney, Sherry Mann (Troy), Jennifer (Dan) Johnson, Tanner (Pete) Colegrove, Ashley Stickney, Kaitlin (Kyle) Wilcox, Sarah (Aaron) Finch, Michael Stickney, Meghan Pinson and Jon Youngman. Also surviving are 12 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, Danny; sister, Arlene Schultz; and brother-in-law, Ralph Schultz.
Family meant everything to Gen. She was loving, caring, nurturing and had a heart of gold. As one of her friends said, "She was a true lady." She will be forever loved and missed.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be made to Camp Courageous, Juvenile Diabetes Research Association or First Lutheran Church.
Thank you to Unity Point Hospice and to the caring staff at Keystone Cedars.
