Genevieve Elizabeth Krell, 96, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at St.
Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. and vigil service held at 7 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church or Iowa City Hospice.
Gen was born March 21, 1918, the daughter of Jacob and Jane (Bradley) Kuebrich. She was the youngest of six children and grew up on a farm near Cosgrove and attended Cosgrove School through eighth grade. The family moved to Davenport Street in Iowa City in 1931 and she graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1936. Gen met Earl Edward Krell Jr. and they were married in September 1939. Earl passed away in 1968. She was employed for many years at the University Book Store, Penney's, Aldens and Rosheks.
She volunteered at many St. Wenceslaus dinners, sales, funeral dinners and other functions. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Altar and Rosary Society and Foresters.
Gen enjoyed Iowa basketball, knitting, gardening and cooking for her family.
Survivors include her four children, Leo Krell (Julie) of Gilbert, Ariz., and Bob Krell (Kathy), Patricia Gaulocher (Dennis), and Lisa Grenko (Mark), all of Iowa City; grandchildren, Kim Holbrook (Nick) of Phoenix, Ariz., Lori Krell of Solon, Beth Murray (Mike) of Amana, Samantha Mulford (Tyler) of Iowa City, Neal Soukup of Iowa City, Caylene Bernacki (Jordan) of Amana and Ryan Grenko, Tyler Grenko and Kye Grenko, all of Iowa City; great-grandchildren, Macy, Kinzee, Tiffani, Khloe, Jack, Kelli, Ava, and Emma; her sister, Marguerite Kuebrich of Iowa City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Father Leo Kuebrich and Bill Kuebrich; sisters, Stella Kuebrich and Mary Wagner; and granddaughters, Kristina Krell and Kelly Krell.
The family would like to thank Solon Nursing Care Center, Iowa City Hospice and Dr. Craig Champion for all the wonderful care they provided.
