Genevieve “Gen” G. Wombacher, 94, died peacefully Tuesday, March13, 2012, at Mercy Hospice following a brief illness. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, March 19, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where a rosary will be recited at 6 p.m.
Genevieve was born Aug. 19, 1917, in rural Johnson County, the daughter of Edward and Anna Neuzil Hradek. On Nov. 26, 1935, Genevieve married Ernest Wombacher at St. Wenceslaus Church. Genevieve was the cafeteria manager at Regina High School for many years and was later employed at Hoover Elementary School.
She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. Genevieve served two terms on the St. Wenceslaus Parish Council and was a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters.
Genevieve loved to bake, especially kolaches, and play cards and bingo. She loved to get together with her family, especially for the annual Ernie Tournie Golf Outing, which will celebrate its 20th year.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the nurses at Mercy Hospital on 4 Center and Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Gen.
Genevieve is survived by her seven children: four daughters, Phyllis (Ron) Rohret of Cosgrove, Beverly Kiedaisch of Richardson, Texas, Carolyn (Ken) Chelf of Fayetteville, N.C., and Marlene (Harry) Frantz of Iowa City; three sons, Raymond (Nancy) of Iowa City, Walter “Butch” (Kate) of Oakdale, Minn., and Ernest “Jack” (Kathy) of Arden Hills, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Jane, Darlene and Rosela.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Lawrence and Francis; three sisters, Helen, Dorothy and Mary; and her sons-in-law, Gene and Bill.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Church, Regina Foundation or Iowa City Hospice.
