Gene A. Holub, 78, of Coggon, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 23, 2016, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 27, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, with a Scripture service beginning at 2:30 p.m. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 28, at St. John's Catholic Church, Coggon. Burial: Mount Olivet Cemetery, Coggon. Gene is survived by his three sons, Curtis Holub of Coggon, Val (Kerri) Holub of Williamsburg and Gordie Holub of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren, Jacob, Josh and Jillian of Williamsburg and Jordan of McAlester, Okla.; sisters, Karen (Richie) Vanourney and Cheryl (Randy) Hagerman, both of Central City; and a brother, Gary Holub of Marion. He was preceded in death by his wife, Zona, on March 4, 2016; his parents, Emil and Carlon; and a sister, Mary Kathryn. Gene was born Aug. 20, 1937, in Central City, the son of Emil and Carlon (Himes) Holub. He graduated from Coggon High School. On Sept. 10, 1960, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Prairieburg he married Zona Kay Walton. Gene drove a milk truck while his children were young and then worked for Carson Grain and Ag before opening his own feed store in Coggon, Holub's Feed Store. He also drove a school bus for North Linn School District. Gene was a volunteer on the Coggon Fire Department for many years. He also was a member of the Coggon Light Plant board. Gene enjoyed riding his golf cart around Coggon, playing cards with friends and families, gardening and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
