Gene E. Brawner, 81, died peacefully at home Sunday, May 18, 2014, surrounded by his family. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 22, at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to EWALU Lutheran Church Camp, 37776 Alpha Ave., Strawberry Point, IA 52706.
Gene was born Jan. 3, 1933, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Clarence and May Snider Brawner. Gene was a graduate of City High School and the University of Iowa, where he was involved in athletics and the Air Force ROTC. He served in the U.S. Air Force, where he attained the rank of captain. Gene was the senior vice president of RBC Dain-Rauscher for many years.
Gene was civic minded and believed in giving back to the community. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served on many boards and committees throughout the years. He especially enjoyed his work with the EWALU Lutheran Church Camp, Mercy Hospital Foundation, Iowa City Noon Kiwanis, the Jaycees and other organizations. Gene was an avid golfer, fisherman and tennis player. Most important, Gene was devoted to his family, caring for his loving wife, children and siblings. He will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to Iowa City Hospice, Home Instead and the Zion Lutheran Church Angels in Aprons for all their support.
Gene is survived by his wife, Ann; and their three children and grandchildren, Mike (Jackie) Brawner of Mount Pleasant and their children, Rachel (Joe) and Erik, Marta (Robert) Zahs of Iowa City and their children, Callie (Adam), Nicholas, Shane and Kathryn, and Lisa
(Jason) Owen of Solon and their children, Lexi, Jaden Addie and Lily; and his brother, Harold of Iowa City.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Richard; and his sister-in-law, Virginia.
