Gary L. Verdoorn, 61, of Iowa City, died Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Mercy Iowa City. A gathering time for family and friends will be held Wednesday, April 2, at Shakespeare's Bar & Grill located at 819 S. First Ave. in Iowa City from 4 p.m. until the last toast is said! A formal memorial service will be held later this year when other family members can be in attendance.

Gary was born in Blooming Prairie, Minn., the son of Eugene Verdoorn and Mary (Mueller) Olson. The family moved to Iowa City, where he attended Iowa City Schools, graduating from City High School in 1971. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Iowa.

Gary has enjoyed a lifetime of experiences in his work, residences, family and friends from all over this country.

His family includes his son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Valerie Verdoorn; his grandson, Aiden; his mother and her husband, Mary and LeRoy Olson; siblings, Lynn Doser, Rani Verdoorn (John), Elsie Olson, Jeff Verdoorn (Ann), Greg Verdoorn (Tyra), Mike Verdoorn (Luann), Troy Verdoorn (Kelly) and Stacey Bahr (David); numerous nieces and nephews, including Tony and Amber Doser; and a very special friend in Gary's life, Lori Lacina.

He was preceded in death by his father and his wife, Eugene and Ellie Verdoorn.
