Gary "Ol' Hippie" Ulfers, 64, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Memorial services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids. Gary generously donated his body to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy.
Survivors include his soulmate, Denise Ulfers of Cedar Rapids; children, Zachary (Jessica Heising) Ulfers of Davenport and Alicia Ulfers of Cedar Rapids; brothers, Alan (Mary Rathburn) Ulfers of Birmingham, Ala., and Dallas (Pam) Ulfers of Norwalk, Iowa; grandchildren, Brecken and Ambrose; nephews, Brandon Burgett and Brenton Ulfers; and nieces, Ryan Ulfers and Casey Werth.
Gary was born May 26, 1951, in Lincoln, Neb., the son of Bobby and Gaynell (Zimmerman) Ulfers. Gary was a union sheetmetal worker with Local 263 AFL-CIO. He was a proud hippie and loved animals.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Pamela Ulfers.
