Gary L. Moubry, 79, died Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at the Vinton Lutheran Home due to complications of Alzheimer's and pulmonary fibrosis. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 8, at First Christian Church in Vinton with the Rev. Connie Wacht officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.
Gary was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Lois Abernathy Moubry. He was a 1955 graduate of Washington High School in Vinton. On April 9, 1960, Gary was united in marriage with Karen K. Powers at First Christian Church in Vinton.
Gary delivered ice cream for Sanitary Dairy in Cedar Rapids before becoming a heavy equipment operator for B.L. Anderson, Vulcan and Wendling Quarries. He retired from Wendling Quarries in 2000.
Gary was a very active member of First Christian Church in Vinton. He sang in the choir, was chairman of the board of trustees; was a member of the Diaconate, delivered Christmas plates, acted as a greeter and belonged to POWWOW, the Wednesday night Bible study group, for 12 years.
Gary loved fishing, hunting, camping and gardening, plus canning and freezing his garden harvests. His greatest joy in life was spending time with and helping his family.
Gary is survived by his wife, Karen Moubry of Vinton; two daughters, Debra (Darrel) Blind of Williamsburg and Laurie (Glenn) Spalding of Vinton; three grandchildren, Luke (Sara) Moubry and Rachel and Mara Spalding; three great-grandchildren, Natalie, Abigail and Kyle Moubry; one brother, Rex (Anna) Moubry of Downs, Kan.; three sisters, Marlene Gilbert of Seattle, Wash., Sherrie (Dick) Anderson of Moravia and Penny Moubry of Marion; and brother-in-law, Larry (June) Powers of Dysart.
He was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law, Hazel and George Powers; and brother-in-law, Howard Gilbert.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association or to Iowa County Conservation - Lake Iowa.
