Gary Lee Miller, 76, formerly of Marengo, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014, in Davenport. Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, Kloster Funeral Home in Marengo. Private funeral services and burial will be on Thursday, Nov. 6.
Gary was born March 12, 1938, in Keystone, Iowa, the son of Waldo and Irene Selk Miller. He spent his childhood in Benton and Iowa counties and graduated from Marengo High School with the class of 1956. Following graduation, Gary enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served on the USS Cape Esperance as a radio operator. This ship transported new combat-ready aircraft as well as personnel to strategic locations in the Pacific, including the Philippines, Ulithi, Guam, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the larger islands of Japan. After his honorable discharge, Gary returned to Marengo. Gary and Mary D. Vogt were united in marriage in 1961. He worked for many years at Link Belt Speeder in Cedar Rapids and later for Picwick Manufacturing, also in Cedar Rapids, where he made many lifelong friendships.
Gary enjoyed turkey and deer hunting, fishing and gardening. He was an avid rolle bolle player and enjoyed team bolle and the tournaments in Koszta and other locations.
Survivors include, Mary D. Miller; their children, Susan Miller of West-minster, Colo., and Teresa Miller Kaszinski and husband Dave of Davenport; a sister, Dianne Miller Patterson of Marengo; brothers-in-law, Martin Tompkins of Cedar Rapids and John Vogt and wife Carol Ann of Marengo; nephews, Rick Miller, Jon Miller, Tim Patterson, Doug Tompkins and Kevin Vogt; and nieces, Sherri Miller, Tammy Rinderknecht, Deb Tompkins, Kathy Brecht and Connie Gougler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Warren "Tex" Miller; a sister, Judy Miller Tompkins; a sister-in-law, Joan Stumpff Miller; and nephews, Michael Tompkins and Christopher Vogt.
Memorials may be contributed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Marengo; Iowa Valley School District Foundation; Safe Haven of Iowa County; the Alzheimer's Association; or a charity of the donor's choice.
