Gary Lee Eschen, 69, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center from complications of COVID-19. Private family funeral services will be on Wednesday, Dec. 16, at The Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Interment will follow at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. As mandated by proclamation, social distancing must be practiced. The use of face masks or shields is required.
Gary was born on Dec. 29, 1950, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Lee and Ina (Franck) Eschen. He lived most of his life in Cedar Rapids. Gary lived at the Abbe Center for over 30 years; before moving to a Discovery Living Home where he met his second family. Gary worked at Options for over 35 years. He participated in the Special Olympics and won several medals, which he was very proud of. Gary was an avid Iowa State Cyclone Fan! He loved taking pictures of family and friends. Gary enjoyed making bracelets and necklaces. He always had a smile on his face and could make anyone laugh. Gary's greatest joy was spending time with his friends and family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his sister, Darlene (Dale) Kilpstrick; three brothers, Terry, Thomas, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Everett (Julie) of North Liberty, Iowa; and many loving extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
