Gary Koza, 85, of Saint Augustine, FL, passed away on January 15, 2026. Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on March 7, 1940, Gary was a proud member of Cedar Rapids Washington High School's first graduating class of 1958, where he competed as a wrestler and football player. Following high school, Gary honorably served his country as a U.S. Army fireman stationed in Korea. During his service, he also played football at Fort Ord on a team that won the conference championship. After his military service, Gary dedicated his professional life to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, retiring at the rank of Lieutenant. Following retirement, he spent 35 years living in Florida, where he volunteered at the Flagler Wellness Center, built lasting friendships, and became well known for sharing stories with anyone willing to listen.
Gary is survived by his wife of 63 years, Paula Koza of Saint Augustine, FL; his sons, Kelly Koza of Indianapolis, IN, and Joel Koza of Saint Augustine, FL; his grandson, Michael Koza of Saint Augustine, FL; his sisters, Sheryl Lang (Phillip) of Cedar Rapids, IA, and Jean Leider (Joel) of Andover, MA; as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Irene and Edward Koza Sr., and his brother, Edward Koza Jr.
Memorial service information will be shared by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Rapids Firefighters Foundation.
