Gary was born on July 8, 1936, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Ira and Florence (Weed) Stover. Twin sisters Joan Schneobelen and Geraldine Nesbit (deceased) welcomed their brother. He was a graduate of Iowa City High School, Class of 1954, and served in the Iowa National Guard.
Gary began working for Northwest Bell, retiring after 44 years of service with CWA Chapter 70901.
On Aug. 8, 1959, Gary married Judy Krob at St. Mary’s in Solon. They had three children, Bryan, Shawn and Mara. On April 10, 2008, Gary and Judy lost their beloved daughter Mara. Gary and Mara both succumbed to cancer.
Gary was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City, he was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and Communications Workers of America.
Things Gary enjoyed most was his role as husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, the love he shared with wife and family. Gary and Judy were Hawkeye football ticket holders for over 50 years. Gary enjoyed cheering on the Hawkeyes no matter what sport and enjoyed cheering on the New England Patriots.
Gary is survived by his wife, Judy (Krob); sons, Bryan and wife Darla of Bloomington, Ill., and children Kyle, Joel and Breanna, Shawn and wife Bonnie of Cedar Rapids and children Colette, Molly and Kara. He was especially proud that he lived to enjoy six Stover great-grandchildren: Liam, Bella, Mason, Mia, Meadow and Kasen.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of University of Iowa Cancer Clinic, Melrose Meadows, The Bird House, Iowa City Hospice and Father Beckman.
We were blessed to have him as the center of our family. His gentle smile, quiet strength, love and care for his family will be missed.
