Gary Donald Hunter, 77, lifelong Johnson County farmer, died Thursday, July 5, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, surrounded by many loved ones.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Father Gary Beckman officiating. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Gary Hunter Memorial Fund, c/o MidWestOne Bank. P.O. Box 1700, Iowa City, IA 52240.
Gary was born Feb. 11, 1941, the son of Donald and Mary Bridget Clear Hunter. He was a 1959 graduate of University High School. Gary married Sharon Krall on Sept. 5, 1961, at St. Wenceslaus Church.
Gary loved farming and enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren at their sporting events. He had a soft spot for John Deere tractors and red Ford trucks. Most important to him was time spent with his wife and their children and grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his wife, Sharon; their three children, Lorene Hunter of Louisville, Ky., Dean (Angie) Hunter of Iowa City and Diann Hunter of Evanston, Ill.; grandchildren, Joseph "JD" and friend Whitney, Julia and fiance Alex Kanellis, Justin and Jessica.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Donna.
