Gary Grout
Iowa City
Gary Grout, age 76, of Iowa City—our adored husband, father, and brother—went to heaven on Friday, Aug. 29, 2025, at his home with his wife by his side.
We know that great pain can only come from great love. Our grief is so deep because of the immeasurable love we had for such a wonderful man who we will miss so much.
Born on Oct. 24, 1948, in Iowa City, Gary was the oldest son of Orval and Violet Grout. On Nov. 1, 1969, he married the love of his life, Marlene Miller. For nearly 56 years, they did everything together: enjoying morning coffee, driving to work together, attending Iowa basketball games, and, most importantly, raising three children.
Gary lived and breathed for his family. His heart was pure gold. Together, he and Marlene built lives together where kindness, humor, love, and forgiveness were the foundation. This kind of environment was only possible through their commitment to each other. Their love sets a perfect example of what a family should be. It’s a privilege that very few people experience, and we’re so thankful that we did.
He was known for his quick wit, wholesome comedy, gentleness, and warmth. Everyone who knew him loved him—and every conversation with him left you happier and in a better mood. He loved to tell stories and jokes. He would never say “no” to a Pagliai’s pizza, a good cup of coffee and a donut, a newspaper, spicy peanuts, an Iowa Hawkeye football or basketball game … or the chance to poke fun at one of his children.
He enjoyed the four decades he spent working around students on the University of Iowa campus, primarily for the University of Iowa Libraries. He believed there was no place better than Iowa.
After he retired, Gary’s priority was spending time with his wife, children, and granddaughters.
He will be forever remembered by his wife, Marlene; his daughter, Leah, and her husband, Mark; his daughter, Sara, and her husband, Bijan; his son, Kyle, and his wife, Jessica, along with their three children: Ava, Evelyn, and Olivia. He will also be remembered lovingly by his brother, Wayne, and his wife, Norma; two nieces, Heather and Shannon; and cousin, Ron.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
After a private ceremony, a casual celebration of his life will be held on Sept. 21, from 11 am to 2 pm, at the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame (2425 Prairie Meadow Drive in Iowa City). In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Gary’s memory to Sharon (Grout) Cemetery.
As Gary would say: The world is round, and so is the sun. Ladies and gentlemen, now I am done.
